When your carpet is cleaned, either professionally or DIY, you expect smells to disappear. Whether it’s from pets, cigarette smoke, damp, spills or stains – the aim is an immaculate, great-smelling carpet. When you’re left with a less-than-fresh smell, it can be frustrating and hard to get rid of.

If you’re wondering why your carpet smells after cleaning, read on for four reasons why and the ultimate solution.

4 reasons for lingering carpet smells

1. Longer drying time needed

Underlay usually takes more time to dry because it’s not exposed to light and air. If a carpet is oversoaked in the cleaning process, it will need a longer drying time to eliminate any moisture. As well as a bad smell, failure to dry carpets properly can lead to mould developing, which could even cause breathing issues.

2. Low-quality carpet cleaning

One of the risks of using a cheap carpet cleaning service is that the equipment used may not be top-notch. It can lack the power to remove all excess water, leaving you with a soggy carpet and a hard smell to get rid of.

You could also find that your chosen carpet cleaner is inexperienced and doesn’t use the correct amount of solution or rinse the carpet thoroughly enough. It’s extremely important to the health of your carpet to use a professional, reputable service that has experience in cleaning all types of carpets.

3. Persistent stains

Stains such as urine, vomit and faeces can find their way into your carpet – especially if you have pets and young children. There is also the likelihood of walking things into your carpet from outside, meaning all of these unsavoury substances are easily soaked through to the underlay. The smell will inevitably linger, due to the salts and protein that are in bodily fluids. Even after the initial stain is cleared up, these salts will cling to your carpet fibres and keep nasty smells in the room.

4. Regular smoking

Cigarette smoke is full of chemicals and tar, making it very thick and easy to disappear into carpets. Clinging to the fibres of your carpet, the stale odour of cigarettes is notoriously difficult to remove. Even after a clean, unless it is carried out by a professional cleaning service, you are likely to still have lingering smells.

Keep your carpets smelling fresh with a professional cleaner

DIY carpet cleaning is okay when you need to clean a small stain or spillage. But to ensure that smells are permanently removed from your carpet, use a professional, experienced carpet cleaner that will get the job done.

The National Carpet Cleaner’s Association (NCCA) gives you access to the best carpet cleaners in your area. Simply enter your postcode and the service you need to the NCCA directory of trusted cleaners and you’ll be able to choose from any number of highly experienced, professional cleaners. Whether you need carpet cleaning, upholstery protection or even allergen treatment – you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Not everyone has the time for an exhaustive spring clean. But nobody wants their house to look a mess. Fortunately, there are some spring cleaning jobs that can have a big impact on your home and only take a matter of minutes…

1. Scrub kitchen cabinets

While you might wipe them down regularly, it’s a good idea to give your cabinets a deeper clean to keep dirt and grease from building up. Make sure you use the right cleaning product for the cabinet doors, but you don’t need to be too fussy for the interior. A soft cloth soaked in soapy water is perfectly fine to use or an anti-bacterial spray if you prefer.

2. Clean and organise the fridge

Thinking about cleaning your fridge is more painful than actually doing it. Quickly cleaning and throwing out anything that’s past its best is enough to keep the fridge looking and smelling good. Empty it out, wipe down the doors and shelves with disinfectant, replace everything and you’re done.

3. Freshen drains

To get rid of those unpleasant smells wafting from the drains, you can freshen them with a homemade solution. Simply pour 1 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of white vinegar or lemon juice down the sink and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse it through with hot water to finish and your drains will be as fresh as a daisy!

4. Clean the cleaning cupboard

It’s a good idea to give your cleaning cupboard a clear-out every now and then. You are likely to discover cleaning products you didn’t know you had or get rid of ones that are out of date. And if you find you’re struggling for space, a cleaning caddy could make a huge difference to storage.

5. Wash the washing machine

Most people don’t think about their washing machine as a spring cleaning job. But it can start to smell – and have the same effect on your clothes – if it’s left ignored.

A quick and easy way to fix this is putting a dishwasher tablet into the empty machine and starting a warm wash. Then enjoy your fresher-smelling clothes.

6. Freshen up the bins

Not the nicest job – but there is a hassle-free way to freshen stinky bins. Simply pour a kettle of boiling water into the empty bin along with your cleaning solution. Leave the water to cool before pouring it out and wiping down the inside.

7. Steam your microwave

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon into a bowl of water, before putting the other half in the bowl. Put in the microwave on high for 3 minutes and then leave for 5 minutes. You will end up with fresh-smelling steam that will make dirt easy to wipe off.

8. Clean kids’ toys

Give your dishwasher something else to do and use it to clean any plastic toys. Wash any soft toys in the washing machine – just make sure you check the care label first.

9. Vacuum under sofa cushions

You never know what you might find if you take a few minutes to vacuum under your sofa cushions. A thorough clean might help you find all sorts of things you thought you’d lost – as well as freshening up your sofa.

10. Wipe down doors and frames

Cleaning down your doors and doorframes is an easy and quick spring cleaning job. Grubby doors can develop in busy homes with sticky hands and muddy paws, which can be rectified using a soapy cloth.

11. Get the carpets professionally cleaned

Carpets have a massive impact on how clean a home looks and smells. But they’re definitely not the easiest thing to add to your spring cleaning jobs list. Thankfully, it’s quick and easy to find a professional, reliable carpet cleaner through the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA).

Simply fill in your location and the service you need to get results within a 10-mile radius. Then put your feet up and let a vetted, insured professional do all the hard work for you.

A carpeted floor can be a thing of beauty – luxurious, stylish and adding warmth to a room. But it’s also susceptible to spillages and stains that can become permanent if not cleaned immediately.

That’s why it’s good to have some tips in your back pocket for when you have a carpet stain emergency. Read on as we look at six of the most common carpet stains and how to remove them.

1. Red wine

Red wine is the most common after-party carpet stain. Everyone has an opinion on how to clean a wine spillage. However, the best method is simply a mixture of water and white wine vinegar.

Soak up the excess liquid by blotting the stain first, before applying small amounts at a time of your homemade cleaning solution. If you panic and soak the whole carpet at once, you can end up spreading the stain even more.

2. Coffee stains

Coffee stains are a very common carpet stain and they’re also one of the hardest to remove. If you don’t clean coffee stains properly, your carpet can end up looking murky.

Soak up excess liquid before using either a carpet cleaner or a homemade mixture of water and white vinegar. Start from the outside and work your way into the middle of the stain. Blot again to dry off any more liquid.

3. Fat-based stains

Baking soda is a good solution for cleaning fatty stains from carpets. Whether the stain is butter, margarine or even gravy, just sprinkle with baking soda and leave it for approximately six hours. Then vacuum the excess baking soda before dabbing it with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol.

4. Pet urine

There’s nothing worse than the smell of cat or dog pee that has sunk into your carpet. The acidic property of urine means that it can also turn the carpet yellow and bleach the colour if you don’t deal with it as soon as possible.

To neutralise the acid, use baking soda. It will not only absorb the liquid but is also great at covering unpleasant smells. Leave it for 15 minutes before vacuuming it up.

5. Ink

Anyone with kids under 5 will appreciate this tip. Using isopropyl alcohol – found in most nail polish removers and hand sanitisers – is great for removing random scribbles from carpets. Apply to a cloth and blot the stain gently. Be careful when blotting the ink, as carpet colour could be removed when applying alcohol to the carpet (test on a less obvious area first).

6. Chewing gum

While it’s not as common as other stains on this list, dried chewing gum is easily one of the trickiest things to remove from a carpet. The best way to take it off a carpet is to use ice cubes. Yes, you read that right!

By placing a resealable plastic bag full of ice cubes over the chewing gum, it will harden and make it easier for you to remove it. Chip it off using a spoon or dull knife and then vacuum the stain with a dry-solvent carpet cleaner.

Struggling with stubborn carpet stains?

The tips above will give you the best chance against common carpet stains. But DIY cleaning has its limitations. To remove the toughest stains and keep your carpet at its best, you can’t get better than a professional carpet cleaner.

The National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) makes it easy to find reputable, professional carpet cleaners in your area. All members are thoroughly vetted, fully insured and adhere to a strict code of practice.

Ready to get started? Find your local cleaner today.

Trust is vital when you’re looking for a carpet cleaner. You don’t want someone untrustworthy loose on your carpets. Thankfully, the National Carpet Cleaners Association makes it easy to find certified carpet cleaners near you.

If you want to be assured of a reputable and high-quality service, read on for five reasons to trust NCCA-certified carpet cleaners.

1. They are… trained and insured

The National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) is the only nationally recognised UK trade association for carpet cleaners. Members are individually vetted to ensure they are highly skilled in carpet cleaning, and even have to take a training course in Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning.

Registered cleaners undertake an exam before being accepted as a member. They’re also required to have Public Liability insurance so your property is always protected.

2. They are… following a Code of Practice

It is reassuring to know that each member of the NCCA follows a standard Code of Practice. These professional standards are self-regulatory and all businesses are accountable for ensuring their work is of the highest quality.

When using an NCCA cleaner, customers can trust that their carpets, rugs and flooring are in good hands. Members are reliable communicators who know how to develop good working relationships with customers.

3. They are… reputable and trustworthy

If a cleaner is a member of the NCCA, you can be assured that they know what they’re doing. Before they gain membership, they will have gone through an extensive training course and passed a comprehensive exam.

But that’s not all. Using a certified carpet cleaner also gives you the chance to check them out beforehand. NCCA members’ work can be reviewed online by previous customers, which will be shown in the search results on our website. That way you can compare range of services and get an initial impression before choosing a carpet cleaner.

4. They are… local

You won’t get an easier way to find a local cleaner than through NCCA’s online directory. You will be able to scan through profiles of available certified carpet cleaners in your area – each one a trusted local cleaner with the NCCA.

5. They are… transparent about costs

It is part of the NCCA’s motto to work with integrity and be transparent. This can be seen in members’ pricing as NCCA-certified carpet cleaners don’t charge upfront. You can be sure that you will get a comprehensive and competitive quote on request. Members provide good value for money and you will get a fair price, with no hidden costs.

Local certified carpet cleaners you can trust

It just makes sense to use certified carpet cleaners who know what they’re doing. So, if you need a tough stain removed or want to keep your carpet looking and smelling great, find a trusted local cleaner today.

Simply fill in your location and the service you need, and you’ll be spoilt for choice.
